Lomi lomi Hawaiian Massage
Lomi lomi is a traditional native Hawaiian massage that has an important spiritual component, available at Shanti Rooms, 70 Hiltingbury Road Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh (a few doors up from Mantra Rooms).
This ‘Loving Touch’ massage incorporates the Hawaiian concept of aloha, which means love, unification and breath, and promotes personal harmony. In modern practice, therapists are still taught to focus on the massage with love and intention.
What to Expect during a Lomi Lomi Massage
Therapists begin the session by placing their hands gently on you and remaining still for a few moments while you take deep breaths. Sometimes traditional chants and music may be incorporated.
The body is more uncovered during Lomi Lomi massage than Swedish or deep tissue massage. This is so therapists can massage more than one part of your body at a time. This massage is performed with long flowing motions that could start at the top of your shoulder and go all the way to the foot. Therapists use massage sheets in the usual way, just uncovering larger areas of your body.
Lomi Lomi massage is enjoyed for its long, flowing strokes using the forearms and generous quantities of oil. Gentle stretches and joint rotations are common, with the therapist massaging two parts of your body at once. Sometimes using one hand or forearm on your shoulder while simultaneously massaging a hip with the forearm. This helps release physical tension as well as mental, emotional and spiritual blockages.
Massaging two areas at the same time with the long flowing strokes are thought to promote harmony and balance within the body. Traditional Lomi Lomi massage includes abdominal massage. Hawaiian tradition considers the colon part of a person’s soul or heart.
The physical benefits of this massage are the same as other types of massage in terms of relaxing muscles, promoting circulation and releasing blocked energy.
